An autistic woman has, for the first time in her life, experienced a fleeting taste of what it would be like to be an actual human person, it has been reported.
Beth Hapworth, 20, became aware that she might be as real as everyone else after exiting a hot shower and making a cup of tea, the resulting sensations reportedly causing her to suspect she might be a member of society after all.
Hapworth said: “It was so weird. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and recognised my face as my own instead of a disembodied meat-mask I could move at will. I began to fancy that I might even have a sense of identity, just like real people.”
“And, as quickly as it had come on, the feeling was gone again, and I was back to feeling like a brain in a jar.”
Government records showed that Hapworth is, in fact, human, to which she replied: “Right. Next you’ll be telling me I’m an adult woman and not just a really experienced child.”
