An AuDHD man told to try the Pomodoro Technique as a way to overcome distractions and procrastination has reportedly fallen down a multi-hour rabbit hole on the history of the tomato.
Anand Trivedi, 33, was originally supposed to be working on some data analysis for the job that keeps him fed and housed, but found it difficult to focus, thanks to the constant firehose of bewildering and overwhelming information that blasts endlessly from his phone, laptop, TV, smartwatch, partner, dog, and so on.
Trivedi said: “A colleague suggested I try the Pomodoro Technique. I hadn’t heard of it before, so I looked it up, and it turns out it got its name from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer this one guy – Francesco Cirillo – used at uni. Obviously from there I clicked around a bit and found out that one of the first people credited with developing the technique used to process tomatoes so they can be safely canned was called Francesco Cirio! What are the chances of that! Only two letters off! So I did some more clicking and then suddenly it was 5am.”
Trivedi went on to list the things he learned about the nightshade family of plants, the 1926 invention of the mechanical kitchen timer, and the work of the Franciscan friar and ethnographer Bernardino de Sahagún, none of which was relevant to the processing of the sales data his boss was expecting to see graphs about the following morning.
At the time of publication, however, Trivedi still has hope for the Pomodoro Technique, telling reporters: “I might have gotten slightly sidetracked when I first heard about it, but I really do think that, with just a few more hours of research on the right kind of timer, and spending between 80 and 100 pounds on getting hold of one, I really am going to become so much more efficient. Plus, with everything I’ve learned, I can now make an absolutely banging marinara sauce. Mamma mia!”
