An autistic PhD student has come up with a research topic so obscure and complex that it may have transcended human language, sources have claimed.
Kit McGodden, 25, wrote an 80,000 word introduction, at which point they realised that they had accidentally written a whole thesis as the prelude to their thesis.
“Isn’t that a metaphor for life?” they mused. “That’s sort of what my thesis is about, although also not at all. I could explain to you what my research topic is, but I’d suggest you bring a tent and enough provisions to last three to four weeks.”
“I’m not really sure which academic department I’m supposed to be in or who my supervisor is,” they added. “Really, the university would need to invent a new department. So I’m just visiting them all, one after another. A bit like the cat who has his dinner at every house in the street so all the neighbours think he belongs to them.”
“The good news is that now I’m the world’s leading expert in this subject, which will be great for my CV so long as I omit to mention that I’m the world’s only expert in this subject. And that no one gives a shit.”
“Luckily, there are loads of decently-paid, permanent academic jobs out there for people like me…. right?”
