An autistic woman has said a resounding “no” to feeling insecure about her job in today’s market by accepting that losing it is inevitable, sources have said.
Chi-Young Lee, 26, has reportedly grown tired of the constant precarity of working in the creative industries, where everyone seems to like the idea of art but not enough to think that artists should be able to afford frivolous things like rent. Instead of worrying about how disposable she is as an autistic woman, Lee has embraced the redundancy she knows is coming.
Lee said: “I knew that being financially independent was a fluke and I was only adopting the identity of an employed person, like when they give you silly glasses for a photo booth.”
“Any minute now, I’ll get called into my manager’s office, and I’ll breeze in with an air of serene acceptance, wave my hand in dismissal and say, ‘No need, Karen, I’ve already packed up my Post-Its and my tasteful wire mesh pen pot. Don’t shed a tear for me.’”
Lee’s manager, Karen Hoyland, said: “No, Chi-Young, I was just going to ask why you’d taken to the company Slack channel to tell everyone to ‘Stay groovy’.”
