In a self-described “moment of madness”, an autistic woman has purchased a supermarket ready meal for tonight that wasn’t her normal one, it has been rumoured.

Emma Bernard, 27, from Derby, usually buys the spinach and ricotta cannelloni from Tesco Express on a Friday evening after work – but made the drastic decision to give the one from Sainsbury’s Local a go.

“It took a lot of courage, but sometimes you have to to take a leap of faith,” Bernard said. “Some would argue they seem exactly the same. But the plastic dish of the Sainsbury’s meal is off-white rather than a light shade of green, so this really feels quite radical.”

When asked what prompted Bernard’s impulsive behaviour, she elaborated: “Well, the cannelloni ready meal was completely sold out in Tesco,” Bernard admitted. “I stood there stunned, not quite believing it could be true. Then I sulked for about twenty minutes, before heading in the direction of the other supermarket.”

According to reports there was a couple of vegetable lasagnes left, but for Bernard that was a step too far. “Yeah, maybe they both have layers,” she said. “But so does a choppy bob. And you wouldn’t eat that, would you?”
