An autistic woman who has always hated her body has discovered that while this is mostly due to patriarchal beauty standards, it is also due to her having always used a spoon to view her reflection.

Emma Bernard, 35, had suffered from body dysmorphia her entire life – until she realised where she was going wrong: “My flatmate Liz saw me berating my horrible face. She said ‘I think you have a distorted view of yourself,’ before gently replacing the spoon in my hand with a mirror.”

“It was a revelation,” continued Bernard. “If only I’d realised earlier, I could have saved so much time, heartache and money on that nose job.”

“I’d encourage any other women with similar challenges to carefully check their makeup bags for stray cutlery.”

Bernard was last seen on Facebook Marketplace buying a full length mirror to replace the large metal ladle she was selling.
