A new show about autism has revealed a twinkly all-star cast in the hope that it might make the autism go down a little easier, reports have confirmed.

Auguspergers – which is due to be released on streaming services this month – follows the unseen perspective of a young, white autistic man struggling to navigate the world. To apologise for this, it also stars a range of familiar British faces: including Steve Coogan, Joanna Page, David Walliams and Natalie Cassidy.

Show producer Deborah Whitehead, 53, explained: “Autism on screen by itself is just freaky as fuck. So audiences will breathe a sigh of relief when they see Danny Dyer referring to Augustus as ‘that geezer with the earmuffs on’.”

“If Rob Brydon’s beaming away in a scene with him, it makes our character with autism instantly more likeable,” Whitehead continued. “A bit like that petting the killer whale scene in Free Willy.”

The show’s writer and creator, Mac Wheatley, 34, said: “Turns out people are much more comfortable with autism on television when autistic people have sod all to do with writing it.”

“We did have a show in development by an autistic writer, but it didn’t quite tell the unique story we were looking for,” Whitehead added. “Which happened to be about an odd little fellow who loves his model Velociraptors and struggles to make friends.”
