A recent survey has found that the top employers of autistic people are the IT and retail industries – closely followed by beloved superhero team the X-Men.
Although the tech and retail sectors are known to employ many autistic people, the X-Men have never counted a non-autistic person among their ranks. In fact, neurotypical superheroes are rare; a history of social ostracism, extremely niche talents, and the desire to escape childhood trauma by becoming someone else are all highly valued by the crime-fighting industry.
Head of the X-Men Charles Xavier, 93, who is so autistic he can kill people with his mind, said: “You can really thrive here if you’re different. There’s on-the-job training, free accommodation and endless opportunities for progression. And nobody bats an eyelid if you come to work in your underpants.”
“We’ve got one guy who wears sunglasses everywhere, and if you insist on eye contact he takes them off and obliterates you with his laser vision,” Xavier continued. “Another one of our employees can drain you of your life force if you touch her. Why settle for a workplace that champions autism over one that encourages you to weaponise it?”
“There have been some HR concerns about terminology,” added Xavier. “But we only call ourselves ‘mutants’ to put people off inviting us to mini-golf.”
